Cattedrale di Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo e di San Giovanni Battista

Nata come Pieve sul termine dell’anno MILLE e più volte ricostruita, negli anni 2018-2019, in occasione dei cinque secoli dalla fondazione della Diocesi di Pescia, la cattedrale è stata sottoposta a importanti interventi di trasformazione e di modifica. Al suo interno troviamo la Cappella Turini, che un tempo custodiva la Madonna del Baldacchino di Raffaello. La tela, infatti, nel 1697 sarebbe stata acquistata dal Gran Principe Ferdinando de’ Medici, per entrare a far parte della sua collezione. Questi, in cambio, ne donò una copia eseguita da Pier Dandini pittore di corte. Dal 2020 custodisce, nel transetto di sinistra, la pala in ceramica invetriata di Luca e Andrea Della Robbia che rappresenta la Madonna con Bambino fra i santi Jacopo e Biagio. Il trittico risulta il primo tentativo di pala d’altare (prototipo) uscito dalla bottega robbiana per una chiesa di Pescia ed è databile al 1460 ca.

This cathedral was created as a parish church at the end of the year 1000 and rebuilt several times. During the years 2018-2019, to mark the occasion of five centuries since the foundation of the Diocese of Pescia, the cathedral has undergone important interventions of transformation and modification. Inside there is the Turini Chapel, which once housed the Madonna del Baldacchino painted by Raphael and later became part of the great collection belonging to the Grand Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici. The work was sold in 1697 and replaced with a copy by Pier Dandini, the grand-ducal court painter. Since 2020 the cathedral houses the glazed ceramic altarpiece by Luca and Andrea Della Robbia was placed in the left transept, representing the Madonna and Child with Saints Jacopo and Biagio. The triptych is the first attempt at an altarpiece (prototype) to come out of the Della Robbia workshop for a church in Pescia and can be dated to around 1460.
