Chiesa di San Francesco

La chiesa di S. Francesco risale al XIII sec. e l’opera più preziosa in essa custodita risulta essere la prima tavola iconografica lignea che illustra la vita del santo, dipinta da Bonaventura Berlinghieri nel 1235. All’interno della chiesa, ad un unica navata con ampio transetto, si trova la Cappella Cardini, edificata tra il 1453 e il 1458 circa. La realizzazione è tradizionalmente assegnata ad Andrea Cavalcanti detto il Buggiano, figlio adottivo di Brunelleschi. Studi recenti hanno rilevato la presenza nel cantiere di maestranze della bottega di Bernardo Rossellino. Sulla parete di fondo affresco di Neri di Bicci. All’estremità sinistra del transetto si trova l’altare Della Barba, con la tela del Martirio di Santa Dorotea di Jacopo Ligozzi del 1595. Alla parete del terzo e ultimo vano della zona absidale è appesa la Deposizione del Passignano firmata e datata 1595, proveniente dall’altare maggiore della chiesa della Misericordia.

The church of S. Francis dates back to the thirteenth century. and the most precious work kept in it is the first wooden iconographic table that illustrates the life of the saint, painted by Bonaventura Berlinghieri in 1235. Inside the church, with a single nave with a large transept, there is the Cardini Chapel, built between about 1453 and 1458.

The realisation is traditionally assigned to Andrea Cavalcanti called the Buggiano, Brunelleschi’s adopted son. Recent studies have detected the presence in the construction site of workers of the shop of Bernardo Rossellino. On the back wall frescos by Neri di Bicci. At the left end of the transept is the altar Della Barba, with the canvas of the Martyrdom of Santa Dorotea by Jacopo Ligozzi of 1595. On the wall of the third and last compartment of the apse area hangs the Deposition of Passignano signed and dated 1595, coming from the high altar of the Church of Mercy.
