Sacrario dei Caduti

Il Sacrario, dedicato ai Caduti della Grande Guerra e inaugurato nel 1938, era stato ricavato due anni prima da un’antica cappella già decorata con affreschi databili fra il 1480 e il 1510, relativi a diversi Vicari di Pescia, tutti appartenenti a famiglie nobili fiorentine. Fra questi, possiamo ricordare il più antico, quello del Pitti del 1481, poi dei Lucalberti, dei Davanzati, dei De Nobili, degli Ubaldini. In un’ampia nicchia a destra dell’ingresso è collocata la Vittoria Alata, un bronzo dell’artista pesciatino Libero Andreotti (Pescia 1875 – Firenze 1933), uno dei massimi scultori italiani del suo tempo. Sulla sinistra troviamo un altro bronzo, Monumento ai Caduti del collodese Agostino Giovannini. Al centro della parete di fronte all’ingresso si trova un piccolo altare, nell’incavo sovrastante è collocato un affresco con Madonna col Bambino e Santi, databile al XVII secolo proveniente dalla Torre del Seminario. Recentemente è stata collocata nel Sacrario la medievale Campana Comunale (1472) un tempo sulla sommità del Palazzo.

This shrine, dedicated to the fallen of the Great War and inaugurated in 1938, was created two years earlier from an ancient chapel which was already decorated with frescoes dating from between 1480 and 1510, relating to various Vicars of Pescia, all belonging to noble Florentine families. Among these, we can remember the oldest, that of the Pitti of 1481, then the Lucalbertis, the Davanzatis, the De Nobilis and the Ubaldinis. In a large niche to the right of the entrance there is the Winged Victory, a bronze by the artist Libero Andreotti (Pescia 1875 – Florence 1933), one of the greatest Italian sculptors of his time and on the left we find another bronze, the War Memorial by Agostino Giovannini from Collodi. In the centre of the wall opposite the entrance there is a small altar and in the recess above there is a fresco of the Madonna with Child and Saints (17th century), which was originally in the Tower of the Seminary. The medieval Municipal Bell (1472), which was once on the top of the building, has recently been put in the Shrine.
